What is not BIM technology?

The term BIM is a popular word used by many professionals and clients who are involved in the construction industry. However the definition sometimes makes more confusion and it will be useful to list the points from (BIM handbook by Eastman, Chuck; Teicholz, Paul; Sacks, Rafael; Liston, Kathleen, 2008) that doesn't count as BIM technology:
  • Models that contain 3D data only and no object attributes. In other words the 3D models which are used only for graphical visualizations and don’t contain data that can be used in analysis of the building.
  • Models with no support of behavior. The models which can’t change their location and parameters. These models complicates the work and can bring mistakes to the building design.
  • Models that are composed of multiple 2D CAD reference files that must to be combined to define the building. This kind of model doesn't reassure that the information from 2D CAD files will be consistent, countable and intelligent to change the parameters.
  • Models that allow changes to dimensions in one view that are not automatically reflected in other views. The errors of this models is very hard to detect and it requires more time and work load.
